Preparation
- In a small bowl, combine all the taco seasoning ingredients: chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, dried oregano, paprika, onion powder, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
- Prepare all toppings: shred the lettuce, dice the tomatoes and onions, chop the cilantro, slice the avocado, and grate the cheese. Arrange these ingredients in separate bowls for a taco bar setup.
Cooking
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and break it apart while cooking for about 5-7 minutes until the meat is no longer pink.
- Add the diced onions to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes until they become translucent. Then add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds.
- Sprinkle your homemade taco seasoning over the meat mixture and stir well to coat the meat evenly.
- Pour in 1/4 cup of water and add the tomato paste if using. Stir well to combine all ingredients.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the mixture seems too dry, add a tablespoon or two of water.
- Prepare your taco shells according to package instructions.
Assembly
- Place the warmed taco shells on plates and fill each with a generous spoonful of the seasoned ground beef mixture.
- Let everyone add their preferred toppings starting with cheese, followed by lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, avocado, and a dollop of sour cream.
- Finish with a squeeze of fresh lime juice and a dash of hot sauce if desired.
Notes
For optimal flavor, toast your spices before adding them to the mix. Rest the seasoned meat mixture for 5 minutes off heat before serving.
